Rare species of fresh water Turtles in Assam temple ponds

Threatened species of Fresh water Turtles are found in Assam Temple ponds

  • They were identified through the technique called eDNA (Environmental DNA)
  • The species found are
    1. Nilssonia Nigricans or Black softshell turtle (declared as extinct in Wild life by IUCN red list)
    2. Nilssonia Gangetica or Indian soft shell turtle (Classified as Vulnerable)
    3. Chitra Indica or South Asian Narrow headed soft shell turtle (Listed as endangered by IUCN)
  • Research findings were published in Journal "Herpetology notes by ZSI, Kolkata
